"The Moon is Down" was written by John Steinbeck. The story is about a small but strong town that has been conquered by a second small group of military men.
For a while, "The Conquered" put up with the presence and violence that the small militia display, but very quickly things start to happen, the small army starts becoming paranoid, and eventually "the conquerors" become "the conquered", even while holding power over the town.
This book does start out dryly, in my opinion as there is a lot of backstory and description of different places and characters. Still, towards the middle, the story picks up action with several intricate details. Yet, in less than 145 pages, it ends in a gripping plot twist.
